For One.

We don’t often post notes from sermons on here, but why not?
Our beloved Pat Thomas submitted great notes from this past weekend’s service and message from Dick Foth.

What a great reminder to all of us, as we kick off a new semester of groups- which means a new semester of relationships!

Here are Pat’s notes:

Text John 13:34-

“Love is the accurate estimate and the adequate supply of another person’s need.”

You can’t have a real, healthy relationship unless you have trust and respect for the other person.

The 4 affirmations of love are:

1. Prayer - Words to God about the other person. This is the highest form of affirmation…when you pray for another person, you are telling them that you value them.

2. Words towards you

3. Actions towards you

4. Actions towards your world

Real relationship is about discovering other people. When it’s all about you and not about the other person, you will fail at real relationship.

First Base - History-Giving - This is critical. Almost all of our lives is history (Biblical ref. Luke 2). I am a history book; a first-person reference.
If you don’t want to know the other person’s history, don’t even think or talk about loving them.

Second Base - Affirmation - When I learn your history, I learn where to love you.

Third Base - Covenant - This entails the commitments we make toward others. This takes, time, tenacity, and truth-telling. Real communication is being able to tell you what I think, feel, and know. (Biblical ref. Matthew 26:31:39 - Jesus told Peter the truth and in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was unafraid to tell God how He felt, what He thought, and what He knew.)

Home Base - Dreaming - Being able to tell the other person your ridiculous dreams and hearing them tell you to go for it, all the while supporting you, encouraging you, and praying for you.
