The Online Community for the Leaders of National Community Church

One.
Be One.
Make One.
For One.

This is Part 8 of the Fall Semester Leadership Lesson Series, Repair and Remodeling. We believe that when it comes to making disciples, creating community, and doing ministry, there is always some assembly required. In the spring, we talked about laying a solid foundation. In the summer, we talked about principles of community construction. This semester, we will talk about how to identify and respond to problem areas. Every structure comes to a place where it requires repair and remodeling.

Repair and remodeling require careful skill. Today, we talk about lead change in your group.

No matter how solid your structure, no matter how good your construction, no matter how skilled your leadership, there will always come a time when you need to do a little repair and remodeling. Sometimes, your group needs to change. Here are 3 steps to consider periodically for your group or ministry:

Re-Visit

Consider the question: Is this team still serving its purpose?

  • Talk about your team mission. Are you accomplishing it? Celebrate wins, but acknowledge losses.
  • Take a hard look at expectations and results. You can’t get different results unless you change something. What needs to be changed?
  • Is our vision the right one? Do we need a vision adjustment?

Re-Vision

Consider the question: Am I communicating the vision?

  • If you need a vision adjustment, do it.
  • Make sure you are constantly communicating the vision. If you aren’t tired of saying it, then people have not heard it enough.
  • Remember: as a leader, your number one job is to replace yourself. In both small groups and ministries, begin talking about multiplication from day one.

Re-Structure

Consider the question: What systematic and intentional changes do I need to make to move forward?

  • If the changes don’t hurt or don’t raise some questions, the changes probably aren’t big enough to make a difference.
  • Put new leaders into positions of strategic influence
  • Cross-train members of your team or give specialized training
  • Change your own portfolio
  • Change some of the tasks you are doing.
  • Blow it up or start over (we will talk about this next week!)
