In community building talks, we often reference “refrigerator friends” as a level of community that small groups should aspire to have. The general idea behind “refrigerator friends” is a level of intimacy that makes it comfortable for another person to go into your fridge and get out what they want. For instance, the Hills go into my fridge and I go into theirs. Leslie goes into my fridge and I go into hers.

Now, I’ve got a new one: Airport Friends. Melissa Westervelt just emailed me about the concept and defined “airport friends” as follows: “People you can call to come and get you at the airport, even BWI, even at 11 at night, even in the rain, even in traffic.”

As Melissa said, here’s to airport friends!

  2. Oooh! I like this! Not sure I have any fridge friends cus my fridge is usually empty, unless my friends put something in there! But I definitely have airport friends at NCC!

  3. Can we just stop pretending that BWI is easily accessible from D.C.?! Seriously, BWI take the friendship thing to a new level.

For the love of all that is decent, do not book a flight from BWI anywhere near rush hour… I’m just sayin’ =)

  4. LOL! True, Stephen, True! But BWI is better than Dulles. Dulles is reserved for the best of friends.
