As a recently retired middle school teacher (22 years of experience in a Christian school affiliated with a Southern Baptist church and prior to that, 7 years of experience in the public school system), I have seen the decline in character of many students and, unfortunately, it is getting worse each year. The conclusion I have come to is this: many, many parents are not setting good examples, and the children are just parroting what they see and hear at home.
