“Portraits of Healing”
a look at the healing hands of Jesus through a series of dramatic monologues
Monday July 31, 2006
7:30 pm
downstairs of Ebenezers Coffeehouse
201 F Street NE * Washington, DC
About the Show:
Portraits of Healing is a series of dramatic monologues excerpted from a larger piece called Traveling Light, which is based on the gospel of Mark. In order to create a unified theme, we selected pieces that focused on individual and healing encounters with Jesus. Through individual character portrayal and some visual symbolism and staging, the purpose of these pieces is to remind us that while we may be focusing on biblical examples of healing, the healing hands of Jesus are timeless and still at work today.
About the Cast/Who is Stage Left:
The cast is made up of some of the members of the NCC Stage Left small group that convened for the first time during this summer semester. The purpose of Stage Left is to encourage NCC performing artists and all those interested in the performing arts to create, explore, experience and discover together in order to reclaim the performing arts as a medium and messenger of truth. Throughout the summer we experimented with various improv exercises, discussed our roles as Christian artists, prepared a small piece for the NCC Variety Show and most recently workshopped and helped refine each other’s monologues in preparation for Monday night’s performance. We are an eclectic group made up of military personnel, hill staffers, fundraisers, full time performers, designers, and nurses, etc…but in this space, we come together as one to deliver a message.
What the cast has to say:
“I enjoy being a part of Stage Left because it affords me the opportunity to collaborate with other Christian performers. After being away from the acting community for so long, it’s refreshing to spend time with other creative people and to be able to perform again.”
“Portraits of Healing puts a modern day “face” on the Gospel of Mark, bringing a fresh look to Jesus’ miracles of old.”
“I hope the audience leaves Portraits of Healing with a new perspective on the Bible and on Christ. My prayer is that they would walk away from Portraits of Healing wanting to learn more about Jesus’ character.”
“After watching Portraits of Healing, I really hope that the audience leaves with a sense of wonder at what Jesus does everyday to help us heal. Even though these stories are told from the bible, healing through the Lord happens everyday.”
“It is refreshing to find an opportunity to be involved in the Arts in the DC. And it is refreshing to find an opportunity to be in the Christian Arts anywhere!”
For any questions about the performance, please email Kacey at . Hope to see you Monday night!
[...] Last night, I caught the final dress rehearsal for the Stage Left performance of Portraits of Healing.√Ǭ† I would really encourage you to come to the performance tonight.√Ǭ† It was an amazing act of worship and a unique picture of what a small group can be.√Ǭ† Stage Left consisted of artists of all types– a couple members had professional experience but most did not; a few had some experience on the stage while others came to the group not knowing the difference between stage right and stage left.√Ǭ† But those individuals placed themselves into the crucible of God’s creativity for a semester and found community and an outlet for their gifts.
