…and the Fresh Air of Grace.

When was the last time you invested any time in reading a book on the topic of sin? If you are like me, you spend lots of time reading about leadership, giftedness, teamwork, etc. You know, the stuff that makes us feel good about being a Christian. But I don’t think I have ever once read a book about sin.

Don Evert’s book The Smell of Sin and the Fresh Air of Grace is a must read, and I wanted to put it on your radar screen. He begins with a modern-retelling of Jesus’ commands to poke out eyes and saw off body parts if they cause us to sin. (Before reading this book, I don’t think I realized that Jesus told people to do that on two different occasions in the book of Mark). The Smell of Sin explores many of the word pictures that Jesus used to describe the disastrous effects that sin has in our lives and on those around us. Most importantly, it describes the effect that sin has on our relationship with God. The book is shocking. It is unsettling. And it is necessary because our generation desperately needs to embrace a Biblical theology of sin.

It’s a short read (I got all the way through on a plane flight between Chicago and DC), and I would recommend it for accountability groups, prayer teams, small groups, etc.

  2. Hey, it’s a great book. Our college group is going through it in small group. Has anyone else done it in small group yet? I have discussion questions formed, but anyone else has any?
