Not only is she the woman behind the keyboard and the steady hand beside her man (Pastor Mark)- she’s more. Lora fills so many roles within and outside NCC that it’s hard to keep them straight.
I have personally enjoyed playing on the worship team with her over the years and appreciate her heart for God, music, and the people of NCC. (We also happen to share a birthday too!) Lora deserves our thanks and prayers not only for the things she gets paid to do, but the countless things that none of us will ever see. One piece of advice to you all- don’t dare her to run through any fountains anytime soon.
What is your official title? And what does that mean you do at NCC?
Business Administrative Assistant - I do the bookkeeping. (**Editors note- she has also led and continues to lead worship on a regular basis at Union Station longer than any of us can remember.)
Tell us a little about the ministries or small groups that you have led or participated in and how that experience has impacted you.
I’ve been on the worship team since Mark and I came to NCC almost 10 years ago. The keyboard player had been playing every week and wanted some time off. She asked if I would fill in … soon after the worship leader wanted some time off … and I’ve been “filling in” ever since. I also started the nursery when Parker was a baby (it basically started as a bunch of moms taking turns watching each others kids), but gave that up when we went to multiple services (and I had to lead worship in both services).
Where can you be found on Sunday mornings?
If I’m leading worship - right up front. If not, I’m usually hovering around the Kids Church lobby area.
When did you start following Christ and what have been some of the spiritual turning points in your life?
I started following Christ as a child. I was baptized in water in junior high - that was a milestone that led me to take my faith more seriously. When my dad died (when I was 25), that catapulted my faith to a new level and I continue to explore that new road 7 years later.
Tell us a little about your background…
I was raised in a Christian home - my dad was a pastor of a church in suburban Chicago. I lived in Naperville, IL until I went to college. I got a degree in music from Central Bible College in Springfield, MO. After Mark and I got married, we lived in Deerfield, IL for 2 years (north side of Chicago), then moved to Springfield, VA for 2 years, then moved to the “little town in a big city” (a.k.a. Capitol Hill).
What is your favorite Scripture passage?
What are your favorite books?
Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Boundaries with Kids, The Art of Possibility
What are your favorite movies?
The Family Man, A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13, Return to Me, Chronicles of Narnia (In high school, it was Back to the Future)
What is your favorite fast food?
Steak n Shake
What is something that most people at NCC would not know about you?
That I have 9 screws and a metal plate in my arm from a car accident (only Joe Matthews and Bill Basset would know this). And that I love to do crossword puzzles and - my new favorite - sudokus.
If you were not working at NCC, your dream job would be?
I would love to have a really awesome voice and be a singer (I’m believing that I’m going to get that really awesome voice in heaven
(**Editors note- we are all looking forward to Lora’s heavenly voice, but we love and appreciate her voice hear on planet Earth- along with her humility)
Who is your hero? (besides Jesus or any other member of the Trinity)
I hate to say this, but I don’t really have heros. The person I probably look up to the most is my husband, Mark.
What do you do in your free time?
Free Time??? Actually, I do love to watch movies, I like to read, and I love to hang with my sisters and brothers.
In NCC: THE MOVIE who would play you? Who would play Pastor Mark?
I’d have to go with Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas - just because I love that movie (Sweet Home Alabama). Oh yeah, add that to my favorite movies.
What is your favorite Pastor Markism?
“Want some pizza?” (This one goes back a ways to the Seinfeld days) and “Haaaaaaay” (say in a soprano voice)
One of my favorite pastimes is hanging with my brother & SISTERs too! We love Lora!!!
